Man City have had their share of surprising results this season but after comprehensively beating Andre Villas-Boas’ Ligue 1 side 3-0 in the Champions League, the team are starting to look like the club we have become familiar with under Pep.

City made the trip to France last yesterday and they faced a stubborn Marseille outfit who were doing all they could to keep City off the score sheet. The French side kept it to 1-0 until Gundogan’s 76 minute strike and Sterling sealed the deal on 81 minutes after Torres had put City ahead on 18 minutes.

For Marseille to manage a draw or better vs City they really needed their raucous home support to drive them on but in this age of behind close doors football the French team rarely threatened Ederson’s goal.

Importantly for City, Pep was able to give key man Sergio Aguero a rest after the Argentinian reported suffering from hamstring tightness after their weekend 1-1 draw with West Ham.

Also City welcomed back Aymeric Laporte who resumed his partnership with Ruben Neves and the two players looked solid in the centre of defence while Kyle Walker played an excellent game providing cover and being very disciplined when it came to his defensive duties.

City were in control throughout the match and never really looked threatened while enjoying a great deal of possession but crucially never looking like the result was going to be anything but a win.

Pep will be relieved Laporte got through the match and will hope his team have now rediscovered their top form.
