Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that striker Sergio Aguero is on the verge of signing for Barcelona.

The Argentinian international signed off in style by scoring two goals as a substitute in the 5-0 win over Everton yesterday. Speaking after the match, Guardiola let slip the 32-year-old’s next club:

“Maybe I reveal a secret. Maybe he is close to agreeing a deal for the club of my heart – for Barcelona. He is going to be playing alongside the best player of all time, Messi. I’m pretty sure he is going to enjoy. And maybe Barcelona are stronger and stronger with him on the pitch.”

With Aguero’s contract expiring next month, there had been talk that Aguero could stay in England, with Chelsea and Tottenham having both been mentioned as potential destinations on a free transfer, but Barcelona were always the favourites for his signature.

As Guardiola says, the striker will join up with his friend and international teammate Lionel Messi; something that both players are undoubtedly looking forward to.

The reluctance of head coach Ronald Koeman to sanction the transfer had reportedly delayed the move, with the Dutchman keen on Lyon’s Memphis Depay, but it is now expected that both players will end up at the Camp Nou.
