Former England international Paul Robinson has dismissed Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s comments suggesting that the Premier League champions will find it “impossible” to sign a striker due to the prices being demanded.

Robinson says that Guardiola is simply trying to ensure the Citizens are not forced to pay over the odds in their bid to secure a replacement for Sergio Aguero:

“Listen, Man City have got bags of money. If the right player becomes available, the money will become available. Don’t think for one minute that Man City haven’t got the money to sign a striker. That’s nonsense. But they are not going to want to be held over a barrel for a player who other teams would pay a lot less for.”

Tottenham’s Harry Kane remains a target for City, as well as for the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, although his £150m price tag is thought to be an issue. It’s the same situation with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, who is reportedly available for a similar fee.

Out of all the candidates mentioned, Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku is believed to be the cheapest option, but the Belgian forward has reiterated that he is more than happy to stay in Italy.

It could, therefore, prove very difficult to get in a new number nine this summer, but Robinson feels there will be the money there to spend if the right opportunity arises.
