Manchester City and Chelsea decided to sign up for the European Super League due to the threat of being left behind by rival clubs, according to the Daily Mail journalist Mike Keegan.

The reporter claims that due to the huge backing provided by their respective owners, Sheikh Mansour and Roman Abramovich, there was no financial incentive for them to be involved, but they feared the consequences of not being in the competition:

It will be interesting to see whether City or Chelsea will be among the first clubs to break ranks if the pressure to withdraw the proposals for the Super League become too great.

Both clubs, in particular, will be concerned about potential reprisals from UEFA. Their participation in this season’s Champions League could have been put at risk, although, at his stage, it is believed the two semi-finals will go ahead without any threat of the two teams being banned.
