Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards says he always expected Pep Guardiola‘s side to drop points once they were back playing in the Champions League.

Many had already crowned the Citizens as champions when they had a twelve-point gap at the top of the table, but Richards claims that he wasn’t one of those who thought the title race was over:

“I don’t think it was over by any stretch at all. Man City were always going to drop points, especially around the time of the Champions League. We all knew that was going to happen. It’s definitely not over. Liverpool are a strong side. Man City got 100 points a couple of seasons ago and Liverpool pushed them all the way. People say the title race was over but it’s never been over, in my opinion. In terms of Man City, they needed that wake-up call to say things are not over yet, that they are playing some of the best football they have played all season, but they are still vulnerable to the counter-attack which Spurs exploited them with.”

Liverpool can close to within three points if they secure victory against Leeds this evening so the Reds are undoubtedly still in a with a big shout. Chelsea, meanwhile, are trailing by thirteen points so it is safe to say it is a two-horse race to finish top.

After City lost to Tottenham, there is likely to be more twists and turns in the coming weeks and months. If Liverpool fail to capitalise on their game in hand tonight, it would swing things back in Guardiola team’s favour but most feel the game between City and the Reds in April could prove decisive during the run-in.
