Michael Oliver has been appointed the referee for Manchester City’s clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Citizens have had previous run-ins with the official and supporters on Twitter weren’t particularly pleased when they heard the news that Oliver will be taking charge:

The most notorious incident involving Oliver came at the beginning of the 2019/20 season when he failed to see Trent Alexander-Arnold’s handball in the 3-1 defeat at Anfield.

After the decision was not given, Liverpool went up the other end and scored the opening goal. It was the turning point in the match and fans have not forgotten Oliver’s involvement in the controversial incident.

The referee also took charge of the 5-2 home defeat to Leicester City last season but, it must also be pointed out, that he was the man in the middle when Pep Guardiola’s side won 1-0 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge back in September.
