BBC pundit Garth Crooks says that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job as Manchester United manager was saved by the performances of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani in the 3-0 win against Spurs on Saturday.

The two veteran forwards got on the scoresheet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and both were named in Crooks’ ‘team of the week’, who said Solskjaer owes them a debt of gratitude:

“These two soccer giants know a thing or two about important games and big moments. They can’t cover the ground as well as they used to, but few know the game better. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer owes his managerial position to these two players. A bad result against Spurs may have forced the Glazers’ hand, much to their disapproval, and part company with the man they seem to depend on.”

In terms of the other players in Crooks’ team, he has also selected Raphael Varane after the Frenchman helped the Red Devils keep a clean sheet at the weekend.

There were also places for Crystal Palace trio Marc Guehi, Conor Gallagher & Wilfried Zaha, Arsenal pair Aaron Ramsdale & Gabriel, while Chelsea‘s Reece James, West Ham’s Declan Rice and Brighton’s Enock Mwepu made up the rest of the eleven.

It will be interesting to see whether Solskjaer goes with both Ronaldo and Cavani in the same formation again when United face Atalanta in the Champions League tomorrow night.
