Michael Carrick will be asked to take charge of Manchester United for a second successive game when the Red Devils face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend, according to reports.

The Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst claims the main reason behind the decision is that United are struggling to secure their “preferred” candidate: Ralf Rangnick:

Rangnick is currently Head of Football Development at Lokomotiv Moscow, and the Russian club are expected to have certain demands (including compensation) in order to allow the German to leave.

In addition, another major issue is Rangnick himself. The 63-year-old is keen to have control of every aspect of the club, and that is not something United are prepared to do, considering he would be interim manager.

It means the likes of CEO Ed Woodward and managing director Richard Arnold now have a decision to make over whether to continue their pursuit of Rangnick or to seek a permanent appointment like Mauricio Pochettino instead.
