Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo claims his former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema should be the favourite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or.
The 33-year-old has been shortlisted for the award, along with 29 other nominees, and Ronaldo thinks the Frenchman’s performances would make him a deserving winner:
“Without a doubt, my candidate for the Ballon d’Or is Benzema. The best striker, brutal level for 10 years and champion above all. Don’t you think?”
It is an interesting take by Ronaldo. Benzema scored 30 goals and provided seven assists last season, and he has started this campaign in blistering form with 10 goals and 7 assists in only 10 appearances.
Even so, the France international is not among the favourites for the Ballon d’Or. He is fifth or sixth in the running depending on what bookmaker you look at.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi is currently odds-on to win, with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea pair Jorginho and N’Golo Kante also thought to be more likely to take home the accolade than Benzema.
We won’t have to wait too long to find out who is this year’s winner as the ceremony takes place in Paris on November 29th.
