Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is keen for the club to press ahead with a move for Villarreal defender Pau Torres, according to Marca.

The Madrid-based newspaper claims that ten Hag “wants” a centre-back that suits his style of play and Torres “fits perfectly into his plans.”

Manchester City and Chelsea have also been linked with Torres in recent days but it does appear as though United are the ones closest to making a formal bid for the 25-year-old.

Marca report that the Red Devils are “willing” to pay as much as €50m (£43m) for the player, which is slightly below his reported €55m (£47m) to €60m (£51.3m) release clause.

Other centre-halves are also being considered by United, with two of ten Hag’s former Ajax players, Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez, having been mentioned as potential targets.

Whether Torres has moved ahead in the pecking order in terms of ten Hag’s transfer priorities, we shall have to wait and see.
