Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville wants manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to resolve the goalkeeping situation before the Premier League season begins.

The Red Devils have strengthened two key positions, with both Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane having been snapped up this summer, and while Neville believes the latter signing will strengthen United defensively, he feels Solskjaer must decide on his number one:

“Varane has played at Real Madrid in the biggest games you could ever play in – World Cups, the lot – so they’ve got two brilliant centre-backs. Obviously the two full-backs as well who have got great energy, both of them are great defenders – one of them is great going forward and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is definitely improving. I think just sort the goalkeeping situation out, settle that down, decide who is going to be number one and United are in a good position defensively.”

Reports in the local media last month suggested that Solskjaer has decided to start the season with Dean Henderson in between the posts ahead of David De Gea, but we shall see if that turns out to be the case.

Neither keeper really convinced last campaign, with De Gea’s save percentage dropping to just 67.5%, which is his worst recorded figure since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

Henderson was certainly better (saving 75.6% of shots faced) but he did make a fair number of errors in terms of decision making which would have concerned Solskjaer.
