Manchester United would be title challengers if they didn’t have manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm, according to Paul Merson.
The Sky Sports pundit didn’t pull any punches when delivering his assessment of the Norwegian’s abilities, claiming that the likes of Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel would all have the Red Devils in much better shape to win the Premier League:
“This is the way I look at it – if Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola were at Man Utd, they would have every single chance of winning the Premier League, it is as simple as that. But I’ve said from day one they have no chance of winning the Premier League.”
Merson is clearly not a fan of Solskjaer and, admittedly, the United boss has not helped himself with some of his decision-making over the past couple of weeks. Three defeats in four matches mean you are always going to come under scrutiny, especially when you are in the hot seat at Old Trafford.
The game against Villarreal in the Champions League this evening, though, is a chance to change the narrative and get United’s campaign back on track. Solskjaer is likely to be without captain Harry Maguire for the match but the Red Devils will be keen to get revenge after losing out to the Spanish club in last season’s Europa League final.
