Manchester United could be “extremely close” to signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The reporter believes that Atletico Madrid are likely to be the Red Devils’ closest challengers for the Uruguayan international, despite the player being linked to a number of other Premier League clubs:

“One source described this deal to United to me as being ‘extremely close’. They consider Atletico Madrid as their main rivals to sign him, from what I hear, but obviously, loads around Europe are looking. If Darwin does move to Old Trafford, it will be a brilliant signing for the Ten Hag era.”

Nunez scored 34 goals in all competitions for Benfica last season, leading to the likes of United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and West Ham all being mentioned as potential suitors for the player.

Whether Jones’ sources about Nunez turn out to be correct, we shall have to wait and see. A number of reports have indicated that the 22-year-old would prefer a team playing in the Champions League.

However, it must be pointed out that United have pulled off similar deals in the past. They sealed a British record £89m move for Paul Pogba back in 2016 when they finished fifth in the table.
