Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that midfielder Paul Pogba was only substituted against Leeds in the 4-2 win yesterday afternoon due to tiredness.

The France international had been one of the Red Devils’ best performers at Elland Road, and replacing him on the hour mark raised a few eyebrows, but Rangnick explained after the match that he was managing his long-term fitness.

Pogba had been sidelined with a thigh problem, which kept him out of action for a couple of months before returning in the FA Cup penalty shootout defeat to Middlesbrough.

Edinson Cavani was not in the matchday squad for the Leeds victory, with Rangnick explaining in his pre-match press conference on Friday that the Uruguayan had a groin problem.

Reserve goalkeeper Tom Heaton has been suffering from a similar injury with the former Burnley and Aston Villa player not taking his place on the bench for yesterday’s game.
