Manchester United are weighing up a move for Benfica forward Darwin Nunez, according to The Athletic‘s Laurie Whitwell.
The journalist claims that the Uruguayan international is being considered as an “alternative” if their attempts to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham don’t work out.
It is believed that Kane could cost £100m but Nunez is thought to be available for a slightly lower amount, with reports in Portugal suggesting that Benfica would sell the striker for around €80m (£67m).
Whitwell mentions Arsenal as a potential rival in United’s pursuit of Nunez but, it must be pointed out, that a whole host of other teams have been linked with the 22-year-old in recent months.
West Ham had a formal bid rejected for Nunez back in January, while Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester City have also been mentioned as potential suitors. In any case, it looks as if the Red Devils are preparing to spend big on a new no.9 this summer.
