Paul Merson does not believe that Manchester United’s decision to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo will improve their chances of winning the Premier League title this season.
The Sky Sports pundit says that the Portuguese legend is still a very good player but he feels it is a rather pointless signing as he is no longer the ‘game-changing’ star he once was:
“I’m just saying what I see. I love Ronaldo. When you say Ronaldo or Messi I say Ronaldo because he’s done it in every country he’s been to. But let’s not pretend he’s going to come here and rip up the Premier League and win the title with United at his age. And if he’s not winning you the league? What’s the point?”
Ronaldo is 36 so clearly the forward is not the same player as the one that left Old Trafford twelve years ago, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t make the difference in big games.
At the very highest level, matches are won by the finest of margins and Ronaldo’s finishing ability could prove decisive in turning draws into wins, or losses into draws.
Whether that will be enough to finish top of the table, it is difficult to tell. Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool also have game-changers of their own so we shall see how the season plays out.
