Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness believes Manchester United have still not proven whether they are genuine title contenders this season.

Writing before the Red Devils’ 2-1 victory against West Ham yesterday, Souness claimed the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have not won any trophies raises doubts over whether they can finish top of the table:

“I agree this is the strongest top four we’ve seen in the Premier League for several years. But with the caveat that there are still more question marks against Manchester United than any of the other title contenders – Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.”

“United have not won any major trophies recently and have spent a great deal of money. Liverpool and City have been the real deal for the past few years and Chelsea have won the Champions League. If you put it like that, it’s common sense. The other ones have not only won trophies, but the big trophies, the important ones.”

Souness is right in the sense that this United team still needs to prove itself, but there is so much talent and experience in the squad that you have to think the lack of silverware for the club recently won’t be an issue.

With the likes of Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo joining United in the summer, you have two players who have won multiple league titles and Champions Leagues. Others, such as David De Gea and Edinson Cavani, also have experience in picking up major honours.

Of course, there are some question marks over Solskjaer and that is fair enough, but other than that, the team has the quality to compete with the very best in the league.
