Ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that his former club will be battling Arsenal and Tottenham to finish in the Champions League places this season.

All three clubs secured three points at the weekend, and with West Ham drawing at home to Newcastle, Ferdinand feels the Hammers will be the first ones to drop out of contention:

“What I liked about this weekend is that all the teams going for fourth, bar West Ham, got positive results You’ve got to perform now. Spurs won a game you didn’t expect them to win, Arsenal won and United won. I think it’s going to be out of those three to finish fourth.”

It is very tough to predict how the battle for fourth place will play out. All the clubs involved have shown vulnerabilities, and United, in particular, have showcased their lack of consistency in some of their performances.

Ralf Rangnick‘s record since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been pretty decent but it is fair to say that he has had a rather kind run of fixtures. Over the next few weeks, with games coming up against the likes of City, Spurs and Liverpool, we will find out a lot more about their top-four credentials.
