All 20 Premier League clubs are expected to “sign up” to an Owners Charter at a face-to-face shareholders meeting on Thursday, according to the Sun.
The charter is designed to prevent a similar breakaway to the one that happened back in April when the “Big Six”, including Manchester United, announced a new Super League.
However, there is reportedly “genuine unhappiness” among certain teams that there are no details regarding the punishments that clubs could face if they decide to leave the Premier League in the future.
There has been talk of point deductions but no framework and procedure has been laid out in the charter for punishing future transgressions. It has therefore been perceived as a rather toothless document.
Even so, amid fears that no agreement would be worse than the current proposal, it will be signed off. The nine-point document includes a commitment to the current football pyramid, whilst explicitly stating that teams can’t enter other competitions unless they are earned through merit in the current league structure.
