Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo “vetoed” the potential appointment of Antonio Conte back in October, according to the Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

The reporter, who is not always that reliable, claims that Ronaldo had “reservations” about the Italian, which he made clear to the United board.

Although the Manchester club’s hierarchy were already reluctant to hire Conte, Ronaldo’s backing is likely to have reinforced their decision to steer clear of the former Chelsea head coach, who subsequently joined Tottenham instead.

Concerns remain about the extent of player power at Carrington, though. It is believed that United’s board have not consulted anyone on the playing side about hiring Ajax’s Erik ten Hag and that is a major worry due to the fact some in the dressing room would have preferred Mauricio Pochettino.

Of course, ten Hag will have the chance to win any doubters over but, with Ronaldo seemingly having a say in decision making, you do have to wonder what would happen if the Portuguese star has a falling out with the new manager.
