Manchester United legend Paul Scholes claims his former club are not as “attack-minded” as other teams competing for the title.

The BT Sport pundit thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tendency to play two defensive midfielders is holding the Red Devils back from matching their rivals at the top of the table:

“That’s the difference between United and I think Liverpool and City – they are much more aggressive, more attack-minded. You think of City going away to Chelsea, they play one holding midfield player and almost play six or seven forward players – that’s the difference in mentality. I think if Ole can get that right with that balance in the team… going forward I don’t think is a problem.”

The ‘McFred’ issue has been a longstanding debate among the fanbase, and Scholes also states that he believes that dropping Fred and keeping Scott McTominay as the only holding midfielder could be the solution going forward.

While Scholes believes it is the right way to go, it’s clear that Solskjaer doesn’t trust Paul Pogba to play in a deeper role, and most supporters would probably agree with that assessment as well.

The major frustration is that United failed to sign another midfielder to solve the problem last summer, and it could well cost them more points in the title race as the season goes on.
