Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was not happy with how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set up his side during the 3-2 win over Atalanta.

The Red Devils came from 2-0 down to seal victory but Scholes claims that better teams than Atalanta would have ripped Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side apart if they had been up against the same all-out-attack system that was deployed in the first half:

“If we play like that against a proper team it will be disastrous. He [Solskjaer] said before the game [it would be] 4-2-4 and it was exactly what it was. If they play like that they’ll get destroyed. There was no connect between the team. Fred gets pushed out and [Scott] McTominay didn’t know where to go. If that happened, could you imagine De Bruyne playing against that?”

Scholes went on to say that if Solskjaer uses the same formation with the same personnel against Liverpool this weekend, it could be a long afternoon for the home team:

“There was something about that first half that was worrying. It lacked unity. That was a worrying sign. Can they play against Liverpool like that? Never in a million years. It’s a great night Cristiano the big hero but the first half was a real worry for me.”

While the comeback victory against Atalanta demonstrated the side’s fighting spirit, Scholes was right to highlight it was only papering over the cracks of what was a pretty ropey performance.

You can’t imagine Solskjaer setting up his team to be as expansive against Liverpool so we shall see how the Norwegian goes about things when the two sides lock horns on Sunday.
