Manchester United would not be Frenkie de Jong’s preferred choice if he decides to leave Barcelona, according to the player’s father.

The Red Devils were linked with a €55m (£47m) offer for the Netherlands international earlier this month but, speaking in an interview with the Dutch media, John de Jong said that the weather would put off his son from joining certain teams like United:

“It’s often bad weather there. Of course, it’s about football, but it does matter. Of course, I know that Barcelona needs money and a great offer for Frenkie could help, but I don’t see it happening any time soon. Although, the five top European clubs have all called.”

If de Jong does place such importance on a city’s climate then perhaps United would be better off pursuing other targets anyway. The Manchester club need players who are hungry and have a burning desire to win, and it seems the Dutchman does not hold the same values.

Considering Barca are eighth in the league table and will be playing in the Europa League after Christmas, you have to question de Jong’s ambition. His father is claiming that the midfielder is content to stay put and play out his best years at a struggling team.
