Manchester United are very much in pole position to sign Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to reports in the Spanish media.

Marseille are keen on selling the Frenchman before the January transfer window closes, but no team has so far matched their €10m (£8.3m) asking price.

Atletico Madrid are said to have offered €5m (£4.16m) plus bonuses for Kamara but that bid was deemed inefficient. Newcastle have also been considering a move for the 22-year-old this month but, with the Magpies close to signing Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes, it’s unlikely that they’ll make an approach for another midfielder.

Chelsea and Roma have been mentioned in other reports as potential suitors for Kamara but United appear to be the player’s likeliest destination at the moment. Supporters would probably prefer the France Under 21 international to make the switch to Old Trafford now, but it seems that any deal will have to wait until the summer.
