Luis Suarez has played down speculation that he could link up with Steven Gerrard once again at Rangers.

The pair spent three and a half years as teammates at Liverpool, where they became good friends, with Gerrard persuading the Uruguayan to stay at Anfield following interest from Arsenal.

Suarez eventually left the Reds for Barcelona in 2014, and he has gone on to score an incredible 424 goals in his professional career. However, despite being able to leave his current club, Atletico Madrid, on a free transfer this summer, the forward said he won’t be moving to Ibrox:

“I think Stevie is doing just fine without me! I am pleased but not at all surprised to see him win the league with Rangers. Winning is what he does and at some point in the future I am sure he will be at Liverpool again.”

Although Gerrard would undoubtedly have welcomed Suarez with open arms if he did register an interest in playing for the Scottish champions, it is not surprising that the 34-year-old is keen on staying with Atletico.

The striker scored 21 goals for the La Liga champions last season and, with the player settled in Spain, it wasn’t ever likely that he would swap Madrid for Glasgow.
