Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed he is concerned about the ankle injury that Scott Arfield picked up in the 1-0 win over Hibernian yesterday.

The 32-year-old was taken off just six minutes after being sent on as Ianis Hagi’s replacement and Gerrard says it is not a good sign that the midfielder had to be substituted:

“I’m worried about it because Scott doesn’t come off the pitch in normal circumstances. He doesn’t normally ask for a physio to come on, he’s one who will just normally get up and go. He’s a brave kid so I’m concerned about it. We’ll assess it. He’s got ice on the ankle area but until it actually gets scanned and assessed properly I’ve got nothing for you, unfortunately.”

Arfield has been in excellent form this season so it would be a big setback if the former Canadian international were to miss out on a number of crucial fixtures in the coming weeks.

The Light Blues face St Mirren on Wednesday afternoon but, if Arfield’s injury is a serious one, he could be sidelined for the Old Firm derby against Celtic next Saturday.

It would not be ideal if the midfielder is missing for such a pivotal match and supporters will be keeping their fingers crossed that he can make a swift recovery in time for the clash at Ibrox.
