Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has suggested that midfielder Bongani Zungu could make his long-awaited debut against Hamilton Academical.

The South African international joined from Amiens on a season-long loan last month but has not played a minute of first-team football so far as he looks to build up his fitness. However, Gerrard said the 28-year-old is now poised to get his first appearance for the Light Blues:

“I am looking to get Bongani involved as soon as possible and he is available for the match at the weekend. He is very much closer in terms of him getting towards his level. We have been trying to accelerate that and giving him extra work and top-ups after training. His application and his attitude has been fantastic. We trained over the last couple of days after getting back from Portugal and we will make a decision but he is getting close.”

It will be interesting to see where Zungu slots into the Gers’ starting line up. Gerrard has rotated his midfield options in recent weeks with the likes of Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo all playing in central areas.

Zungu is a holding midfielder by trade so it would seem that one of Kamara or Jack could make way if he is given his first start at Ibrox this afternoon. Considering the length of time the South African has been on the sidelines, though, Gerrard may opt to use him from the bench instead.
