Former Rangers fullback Alan Hutton says manager Steven Gerrard should ask striker Alfredo Morelos to see out the remainder of the season with the Scottish club.

The Light Blues’ Director of Football Ross Wilson has confirmed they have an agreement in place with the Colombian international that he can leave Ibrox if a team matches their asking price. However, with the forward now back in form, Hutton feels Gerrard should look to stop the player leaving in the January transfer window, as his goals could be crucial to winning the title:

“This could be such a massive, important time. If Rangers win the league, this will go down in history so wouldn’t you want to be part of that for the sake of five months? That’s how I’d be playing it: ‘Give me your best five months, we’ll speak in the summer’.”

Gerrard does have the likes of Kemar Roofe, Jermain Defoe and Cedric Itten at his disposal so it is not as though the Gers would be without firepower if Morelos leaves but Hutton is right to point out that the manager will want as many options as possible.

Whether the Colombian could be persuaded to stay until the end of the campaign, though, is another matter. Much will depend on who comes in for him when the transfer window reopens. He has been linked with the likes of Lille, Aston Villa, West Ham and West Brom in recent months.
