Pundit Dean Windass believes Rangers could be in with a chance of landing Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez if manager Steven Gerrard can persuade him to move to the Scottish champions.

Suarez is said to have a break clause in his contract with Atletico which means the Champions League winner can leave on a free transfer if he so wishes this summer. As many Arsenal and Liverpool fans in particular will remember Luis Suarez was the subject of a £40,000,001 bid from Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal back in 2013 when the Uruguayan was in his pomp at Anfield. At a time when release clauses were a relatively new thing, the now former Barca hitman was in serious demand and was the subject of the famous cheeky bid from Arsenal of £1 over Suarez’s release £40million clause with Liverpool.

Both teams look like they could still both use Luis Suarez’s services even 8 years on from the famous attempted transfer raid of Liverpool by Arsenal so Rangers may well be in serious competition for the striker along with current club Atletico Madrid.

With Gerrard being a former teammate of Suarez’s at Liverpool, Windass thinks he could encourage his friend to make the switch to Scotland, as long as though they qualify for the Champions League group stages:

“Could Steven Gerrard entice Luis Suarez to go to Glasgow Rangers? I can see it. Who wouldn’t want to sign for Glasgow Rangers to be quite honest with you? That could entice him [being in the Champions League]. Steven is very good friends with him and quoted him as one of the best strikers that he’s played with. Rangers fans would be delighted if that happened. He would get you goals, and the affinity he’s got with Steven, I’m sure he’ll be asking the question.”

It is a bit of a stretch from Windass, to say the least. While Gerrard and Suarez are likely to be still in contact, there is more to a transfer than that. Wages, signing-on fees and agents would all make the deal almost impossible to complete, unless the forward was willing to take a massive pay cut.
