West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has made it clear that he sees himself playing in the Premier League rather than moving north of the border.

Rangers were linked with the England international last month but, with his contract set to expire in the summer, the 28-year-old has hinted that a switch to another English team is more likely:

“I see the speculation and there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s out of my control but I want to be back playing in the Premier League.”

Johnstone can already sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside of England, so Rangers do have an advantage in the fact that they can already hold formal talks with the player.

However, with Premier League teams such as West Ham, Tottenham and Newcastle also interested in the shot-stopper, it is hard to see how the Light Blues can compete.

English teams can offer much higher wages than the Gers, and the only thing that the Scottish champions have in their favour is the prospect of playing in the Champions League group stages. From his comments, though, it appears Johnstone won’t be swayed by European football alone.
