Rangers striker Jermain Defoe says a key conversation with Steven Gerrard pushed him into making the switch to Ibrox two years ago.

Gerrard was presenting his case to the veteran forward about why he should move north of the border, when he compared the Light Blues to his former club, Liverpool. Defoe says that comment helped him make his decision:

“I met him in London, had a discussion and did a presentation and he said something to me and I was like ‘wow’. Rangers reminds him of Liverpool. The size of the club reminds him of Liverpool. That’s a powerful statement and we know the size of the club and its history and I thought. It’d be good for me and a new challenge and opportunity to win a league title.”

Defoe also remarked that he wished he joined Rangers earlier in his career, although his performances have since shown that, despite being in his late 30s, he could do a job for the Scottish club.

After joining on loan from Bournemouth in January 2019, he racked up eight goals in 20 appearances. The striker did even better in his first full campaign, scoring 17 in 32 games.

Injuries and the arrival of Kemar Roofe have, though, limited his game time this year, but his influence in the dressing room has also been invaluable as the Gers secured title number 55.
