Ex-Rangers star Christian Nerlinger has revealed that the Scottish champions have considered making a move for Niklas Dorsch in a previous transfer window.

Nerlinger, who is now Dorsch’s agent, said that the Gers’ interest was genuine but the club decided to pursue other targets instead:

“Rangers showed interest but it never came to a situation where we were talking concretely. They went in a different direction. It would have been a perfect fit but Niklas (Dorsch) was also wanting to become an important player in the Bundesliga. He is now a leading player at Augsburg.”

Dorsch was first linked with a move to Ibrox back in the summer of 2020, before he eventually made the switch from Heidenheim to Belgian Pro League club Gent.

His performances last season impressed Bundesliga side FC Augsburg enough to shell out €7m (£5.84m) plus €1m (£830,0000) in add-ons on the 24-year-old back in July last year.

It seems likely that Dorsch would have been a success in Scotland, considering he is now performing well in German’s top tier but, it must be said, that Rangers are not short of options in the middle of the park.

With Ryan Jack back fit and available, as well as the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield and Steven Davis in the squad, manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a midfield brimming with talent.
