Former Celtic midfielder Kris Commons claims that Rangers don’t have to match the heights of last season to finish top this campaign.

The Gers have flattered to deceive at times in the opening few months but Commons feels they only need to be superior to Celtic to lift the Premiership title for a second consecutive year:

“It’s all relative. Last season doesn’t matter. What matters is that they are still getting the job done and are still top of the table ahead of Celtic. Rangers don’t need to be as good as they were last season. They just need to be better than Celtic. That’s the bottom line for Steven Gerrard and his players. There’s an old saying that you don’t need to run faster than the bear, you just need to run faster than the guy next to you. That’s what Rangers are doing just now.”

Commons does go on to say that the title race is “wide open” this season but, going by the weekend’s results, you have to think it is really Rangers’ to lose.

Steven Gerrard’s side arguably put in their most complete performance of the campaign so far in the 6-1 win over Motherwell, while Celtic stumbled at home to Livingston.

A four-point lead at this stage is certainly not bad, considering Rangers have really not got going yet. Hopefully, over the coming weeks and months, the Light Blues can stretch their advantage at the top of the table.
