After losing a key Old Firm derby at the weekend, some Rangers supporters have been turning their ire on those they see as responsible for the club’s reversal in fortunes this season. Director of Football Ross Wilson is one of those who has been subject to criticism.
The 38-year-old has been in charge of the Gers’ recruitment after being appointed in October 2019, and many fans on Twitter feel that the club’s transfer business has not been good enough since he arrived:
Finally someone brave enough to call out Ross Wilson. Never ever seen someone so bad at their job get such an easy time at Rangers

Ross Wilson Gets all the Plaudits when things are going great but the manager seems to always be the fall guy when things aren’t going well, our signings have been totten in the last 2 windows yet this all seems to Gio’s fault

Wilson was being praised for getting Gio in so smoothly following Gerrard leaving, and when Ramsey was signed there were people wanting a statue of Wilson

Not one signing in the last two windows has taken the squad forward/moved it up a level. Said for months we ve stood still instead of going out and getting a couple of players like veerman and Olsen that improve the 11. Yes mayb would have cost 10m but would have sealed us title

He shouldn’t be allowing players to wind their contracts down. If players aren’t willing to sign an extension with 2 years left to go, they should be sold regardless of what the manager wants

While some of the signings, most notably Juninho Bacuna, Jack Simpson and Bongani Zungu, have simply not been good enough, there are mitigating circumstances.
Wilson took over just before the global health crisis hit so his hands were somewhat tied in terms of transfer funds. Where criticism is probably more justified is when it comes to player sales.
The only real notable departure during Wilson’s time is Nathan Patterson, who was sold for £12m to Everton.
Not being able to refresh a squad that has become stale is the main accusation that can be levelled at Wilson and the club’s board in general.
