Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell is predicting that Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield will be given a new contract by the Scottish champions.

The 33-year-old’s current deal expires in the summer, and he has recently confirmed that no talks are currently planned about his extending his stay at Ibrox. However, new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst has played him regularly since his arrival at the club last month and Campbell thinks that will lead to Arfield remaining with the Light Blues:

“I think a new deal will be on the table soon. He went up there on a free and has done very well. It is time to put up now. He is playing regularly under Van Bronckhorst. It looks to me as if he’s been given more responsibility within the team. He has a bigger role.”

“If he continues to do the business and is happy there, which he sounds to be, then I expect the club to offer him an extension. If they don’t, he is in the shop window for a team down in the Premier League. I like Arfield. I think he’s a very good player.”

Arfield has certainly been a favourite of van Bronckhorst’s so far. Despite not starting in the two Europa League fixtures under the Dutchman’s management, he has been selected to play in four of the last five league games.

Considering he had started just once in the Premiership all season before van Bronckhorst’s appointment, he definitely has been given more responsibility by the new Gers boss. If that continues for the rest of the campaign, he will surely be handed a contract extension.
