Aston Villa are likely to make an £8m offer for Rangers’ left-back Borna Barisic in the January transfer window, according to reports in the English media.

Ex-Gers boss Steven Gerrard is keen on being reunited with the Croatian international at his new club with one of his priorities being to strengthen the left-hand side of defence.

Barisic was signed by Gerrard for the Light Blues three and a half years ago, having made the £2.2m move from NK Osijek. He has racked up seven goals and 34 assists in 126 appearances for the Scottish champions.

However, the defender has recently turned 29 and, with the much younger Calvin Bassey waiting to take his place, it may be seen as an opportunity to raise funds for new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s own transfer plans.

It is believed the Dutchman has been told that there won’t be any money for new signings unless players are sold first.
