Rangers and a host of other British clubs have lost out to Union Saint-Gilloise in the race to sign MK Dons wingback Matthew Sorinola, according to reports in England.

The Gers, Celtic, Chelsea, Leeds, Bournemouth and Norwich were all keen on snapping up the 20-year-old but he has opted to move to Belgium instead.

Union Saint-Gilloise are a relatively small club, having recently won the Belgian second division title, but they are bankrolled by Brighton owner Tony Bloom so they do have some decent financial resources.

Even so, Sorinola’s move abroad is a big surprise. The wingback has performed well in England’s League One this campaign, scoring one goal and providing six assists in 43 appearances.

The defender recently rejected a new contract and, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season, Rangers could have signed him for a nominal fee. The Light Blues will, though, sign another youngster from England this summer with Nnamdi Ofoborh set to arrive from Bournemouth in July.
