Tottenham are confident that they can beat the competition to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to The Sun.

The English tabloid claims Spurs are stepping up their interest in the 29-year-old who has also been linked with Rangers, West Ham and Southampton in recent months.

Johnstone is out of contract at the end of the season, and he will be available on a free transfer, which has allowed the Gers to make a move for the England international, who has been capped three times at senior level.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are likely to be looking for a replacement for current number one Allan McGregor, who may retire in the summer.

Johnstone could have been attracted by the prospect of playing in the Champions League at Ibrox but, if they finish second in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers would have to make it through the qualifying rounds; something they’ve failed to do in recent years.

There may still be a chance that Johnstone rejects Tottenham, though, who are said to be only offering him a chance to be back up to Hugo Lloris.
