Rangers will have to fend off interest from Southampton if they want to secure Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist, according to reports in England.

The 29-year-old is out of contract at Tannadice this summer, and the Saints are trying to muscle in on the Bears’ attempts to sign the Swiss shot-stopper on a free transfer.

With both Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin’s futures up in the air, with their own deals set to expire at the end of May, director of football Ross Wilson has seemingly pinpointed Siegrist as a potential replacement.

While the Gers can offer the former Swiss Under 21 international the opportunity of playing in the Champions League next season, the higher wages on offer from Southampton may tempt him into moving south.

Siegrist, who has been linked with Celtic in the past, may also be looking for guarantees over playing time. If Rangers can give him assurances in this regard, it could just sway things in their favour, but we shall have to wait and see who he chooses to sign for.
