Rangers sent scouts to watch Sparta Rotterdam midfielder Abdou Harroui at the European Under 21 Championships earlier this month, according to reports in the UK.

With Steven Davis turning 37 next year, it looks as though the Light Blues are eyeing a long-term replacement for the Northern Irishman.

Harroui was impressive as Holland’s U21’s beat France in the quarter-finals. He provided the assist for Myron Boadu’s equaliser as they came from behind to win 2-1. However, the playmaker wasn’t able to stop his team from losing in the semis to Germany.

At club level last season, the 23-year-old performed pretty well, scoring six goals and contributing three assists in 34 appearances.

It must be said most of Harroui’s goal involvements for Sparta came in the first eleven games of the campaign, when he hit the back of the net five times. In general, though, he isn’t a goalscorer, and he does most of his work in a deeper role, dictating play in the middle of the park.
