Rangers are poised to begin talks over extending captain James Tavernier’s contract, according to reports in the Scottish media.

The 29-year-old’s current deal at Ibrox expires at the end of next season, but after a superb campaign that has seen him make 32 goal contributions in total, the Light Blues are very keen to retain the fullback’s services.

Tavernier is also happy to stay after playing a key role in helping win Rangers’ first league title in a decade. It was less than a year ago that it appeared that the player was looking for a way out of the club, with the likes of Newcastle and Aston Villa heavily linked with the right-back.

However, the defender resolved to remain at the Bears and he has since gone on to put in some outstanding performances that have culminated in his team winning the Scottish Premiership.

Tavernier will likely be one of a number of players that will be offered new contracts this summer, with the likes of Glen Kamara and Connor Goldson also looking for extensions to their current deals.
