Rangers are “very much in contention” to sign Hearts defender John Souttar, according to the Daily Record.

The 26-year-old has narrowed down his next club to three possible options, with the Light Blues being one of them. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side are reportedly battling it out with English Championship teams Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United.

Souttar is likely to make a final decision on his future “early next week” and there is a possibility that he could move to Ibrox this month, rather than at the end of the season.

If he decides on a switch to the Gers, the Scottish international is believed to prefer a transfer to happen in January rather than waiting until the summer where he could be snapped up for free.

That would, however, require the Scottish champions to agree a fee with Hearts. They do have funds after selling Nathan Patterson to Everton but we shall see how this deal plays out.
