Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu’s move to Rangers collapsed due to the South African international’s poor fitness levels, according to reports in the French media.

The 27-year-old was poised to make the switch to Ibrox for £3.6m but it appears the transfer stalled due to the Gers’ concerns about the player’s conditioning.

Zungu has not played a game since March when the French league season was curtailed, and he has also been frozen out by Amiens, so he has had no opportunity to build up his fitness during pre-season.

There was also talk that the Light Blues were struggling to agree personal terms with the South African, while the Scottish club’s decision to sign both Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten may have also impacted the transfer budget.

Whatever the truth of the matter, it looks like a move for Zungu is dead in the water. Manager Steven Gerrard has said, though, that the Gers are still actively looking for another midfielder.
