Although the likes of Jordan Jones, Cedric Itten and James Tavernier got the headlines for their goals in the 5-1 win over Motherwell, it mustn’t be forgotten that Calvin Bassey also made his full league debut for Rangers at the weekend.
The 20-year-old was a surprise starter at Fir Park after he replaced Borna Barisic in the starting line up with the Croatian sidelined with a thigh strain. However, the Englishman did very little wrong, leaving many fans on Twitter impressed with his first 90 minutes for the club:

He could become Bornas replacement eventually. An absolute athlete and brilliant on the ball. We have some outstanding young players in the first team squad right now.

Bassey is unlikely to displace Barisic as the first choice left-back anytime soon but it’s good to know that there is a reliable backup in place.
Last season, manager Steven Gerrard chopped and changed between the likes of Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan as Barisic’s understudy but neither were really comfortable playing out of position.
It seems as though picking up Bassey on a free transfer from Leicester could well turn out to be a very smart piece of business.
