Former Rangers manager Mark Warburton believes the progress that the club have made under Steven Gerrard in recent seasons means that the Light Blues would be able to cope with the demands of playing in the English Premier League.

Reports in England have suggested that the Gers could be invited to take part in an expanded British Super League, and Warburton thinks the transition to playing clubs south of the border wouldn’t be too much for Gerrard’s current team:

“They’ve won the title, budgets have obviously increased, look at the squad Steven (Gerrard) and his team have assembled. They’ve got into Europe in the last three seasons, so there’s no doubt they’ve got a quality squad now.”

“They would be up against it, it would be disrespectful to say otherwise. They’d find it tough because of the consistency of the challenges week in week out. But there’s no doubt they could compete at the highest level.”

Rangers have shown their capabilities with good results against the likes of Benfica and Porto in the Europa League over the last two years so they would have the quality to compete but, as Warburton points out, the side may struggle to consistently perform against higher calibre opponents.

At this stage, though, it is all merely hypothetical and we shall see in the coming weeks and months whether there is any substance to these proposals.
