The Hammers failed with a loan bid for the 23-year-old in January, but Marcelo Carracedo says a team could probably sign him for £8m, instead of £15m, in the current financial climate:

“At some point, if there was something around £15 million, they [River Plate] would let him go. Today that number is impossible. Any offer that comes is going to be much less than that. Today, £8 million is a good offer.”

Considering Pablo Zabaleta is leaving the London club at the end of the season and, with Jeremy Ngakia’s future up in the air, a move for a player like Montiel would seem like a good idea.

He is a good age where he can still improve and he is already as senior international for Argentina. However, West Ham’s financial situation may make things difficult.

Even a relatively modest sum, such as the £8m needed for Montiel, could prove a challenge, with the Irons reportedly needing cash from potential player sales in order to balance the books.
