West Ham, Tottenham Newcastle, Everton and Fulham are all interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez this summer, according to 90min.com‘s Graeme Bailey.
The journalist, who has a mixed track record when it comes to reliability, claims the centre-back is weighing up his options due to a lack of playing time at Anfield:
“I am told Tottenham, Newcastle, West Ham, soon to be promoted Fulham, and Stanley Park neighbours Everton would all happily take Gomez. The issue for Gomez is that he is contracted to Liverpool until 2024, so the club don’t have to sell him – but will Klopp let him leave? That is the major question for the Anfield boss.”
“They might be thinking Gomez is needed to replace Joel Matip at some point, but he is only 30 and has been brilliant this season – so that would very much be in the long-term, and as mentioned, Gomez is thinking about his short-term future.”
Gomez is only 24 years of age and has 11 caps for England so he would undoubtedly fit the profile that Hammers boss David Moyes would be looking for in a defender.
Angelo Ogbonna (33) and Craig Dawson (31) are not getting any younger so signing a potential long-term replacement will be one of the club’s priorities.
Whether the Irons can persuade Liverpool into selling up, it remains to be seen. As Bailey mentions, Joel Matip has turned 30, while Virgil van Dijk is 31 in July so the Reds may see Gomez as a long-term solution. If the player agitates for a move, though, manager Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to stand in his way.
