West Ham are likely to be in contention to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to journalist Andy Brassell.

The reporter, who has worked for talkSPORT, the BBC, BT Sport and ESPN, claims that the Hammers could secure the Uruguayan’s signature at the second time of asking after failing with an offer in January:

“He’s just a bull of a centre-forward, he occupies defenders and not just one defender, but central defenders so well… despite everything that’s been going on around him, change of coach, he’s been keeping his head down and been brilliant… West Ham were very interested in signing him, but wouldn’t go up to the €60m (£50m) that Benfica wanted in winter. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up there at some point.”

Nunez has been in sensational form for Benfica this campaign, bagging 28 goals in all competitions, but his performances have also attracted the attention of some of the biggest sides in Europe.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Newcastle have all been mentioned as potential suitors in England but there are also teams in Spain keen on securing his services.

If West Ham were to gazump all of these clubs to sign Nunez, it would be a massive coup for manager David Moyes, who desperately needs an alternative to Michail Antonio. We shall see what the summer brings.
