Rangers have confirmed that striker Jermain Defoe has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until the end of next season.
As part of the deal, the 38-year-old will also take up a coaching role in manager Steven Gerrard’s backroom staff, and supporters on Twitter are delighted that the forward will be sticking around:

Superb news. Makes perfect sense, no better role model to have in the coaching staff than Jermain

Brilliant news… having such a brilliant ambassador and role model around the club as an influence to the younger lads has no downside… an utter gentleman too… well done Jermain ??

The impending arrival of Fashion Sakala from KV Oostende on a free transfer did suggest that Defoe’s time at Ibrox had come to an end but it’s great to hear that he will be staying around for one more season at least.
His influence off the pitch has been equally important as his contributions on it over the past two and a half years. As a coach, he will be in a perfect position to share his wisdom with the younger players in the squad. It seems like a perfect solution for all parties involved.
