Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Manchester United should take inspiration from their second-half display against Atalanta midweek when they face Liverpool this evening.
The Red Devils have struggled for form recently, but Merson believes that Wednesday night’s comeback from 2-0 down, combined with their determination to beat a fierce rival, should make the game today a tight contest:
“It’ll be a tough game for both sides and if there’s one thing Manchester United don’t want, it’s to lose to Liverpool at home. If they play like they did against Atalanta in the second half, I give them every chance of getting a positive result. This is a tough game for both sides and usually, Premier League encounters between these two teams fizzle out and pretty much nothing happens. I hope that isn’t the case this time around. The atmosphere at Old Trafford will be electric and the fans will be right behind the players.”
Merson has gone with a 1-1 draw, which is a somewhat surprising prediction considering a lot of other pundits have been writing off United’s chances.
However, against Liverpool at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have tended to up their game, and with the crowd also involved, it is very difficult to guess how this match will play out.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 21 matches but, they have been vulnerable defensively, and United undoubtedly have the firepower to cause them a lot of problems. It will be a fascinating fixture to watch as always.
